With her latest single “Closure,” Athens, Georgia-based indie pop singer-songwriter Aspen Anonda reminisces on losing love as quickly as she found it. Unafraid to express the truth behind her experiences, Aspen recounts the heartbreak she experienced as the result of an abrupt end to a relationship in which she was not allowed closure.
With lyrics including, “ran into your mom at the grocery store, I just turned away” and “saw your little sister at my show, she gave me a smile,” Aspen invites listeners into her personal space, providing an intimate glimpse of the aftermath of a relationship gone wrong.
“’Closure’ is a true story for me, so I wanted people to get to know me even more through scenes in my bedroom and my town,” Aspen explains. Fittingly, the accompanying music video directed by Akshay Thomas captures montages of Aspen’s hometown, including her apartment and local laundromat.
Although “Closure” is a breakup song, something about the 80s-inspired instrumentation and impressive delivery feels optimistic. Aspen may have been jilted by a lover who “used [her] like a punching bag,” but she’s not wallowing in bitterness. Instead, she is brimming with the confidence and strength that comes from knowing your own worth.
