With his latest single, “Enough for Me,” Los Angeles-based Nigerian-American artist Olly Sholotan searches for the secret to satisfaction. The song’s reflective lyrics, masked under the guise of a vibey pop banger, explore the feeling of having it all and still being discontent.
Dissatisfaction – with our lives, relationships, and ourselves – seems to be trending and increasingly so. Ironically, chasing highs and the next best thing often makes fulfillment even more elusive. “I can feel the night in the morning,” Sholotan sings. “All the stars ain’t enough for me.”
Sholotan explains the inspiration behind the song: “’Enough for Me’ is about not being able to find the joy and love your own accomplishments. It’s about that self-defeating game artists play with themselves where they work so hard for something, but when they get it, they see it as inadequate and are already chasing the next bigger thing.”
And success is no stranger to Sholotan who is also an accomplished actor. In 2020, his debut feature film, “Run, Hide, Fight,” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in Italy alongside the work of celebrity filmmakers. Sholotan landed a song placement in the film’s soundtrack, and his music was also featured on the red carpet. Recently, he wrapped up filming for his next project, “Evolution of Nate Gibson,” alongside Oscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, Jim Belushi, Charlie Rowe, and Josephine Langford.
Fans of John Legend will feel overwhelmingly content with Sholotan’s music. His rich, full vocal expression, coupled with soulful grooves, offers a warm embrace that is all at once inviting and comforting.
“Enough for Me” leaves listeners with more questions than answers lyrically, but perhaps the song was never meant to provide a resolve. The upbeat nature of the musical backdrop encourages audiences to learn to dance in the rain in spite of.
