Maryland-based hip-hop artist Nephie wrote his newest song about love, “Complicated,” entirely alone. He connected with D.C.-based Yona Marie and South African Hurricane Ceasar on the internet during the pandemic earlier this year, and led the trio to organize the entire song in totally separate studios.
Nephie is grateful for his DMV upbringing, as he says it gave him a more nuanced view of the world and exposed him to a variety of people and attitudes.
“Thank goodness for music – it has been my escape for many years,” Nephie shares. “I feel like words are hard to come by for me sometimes because I speak better with notes. When I sit down at the keyboard – it’s easy. The notes speak for me.”
“Complicated” explores the ups and downs of love. Nothing is black and white, a sentiment Nephie explains.
