Hypno funk artist, Christopher Ryangoma Tabaro, known as Chris Goma, released his new song “CAN’T FOLD” on January 18. The Los Angeles-based Canadian singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist cites this song as an anthem, reflecting on his family’s experience leaving their war-torn country of Rwanda. “CAN’T FOLD” appears on Goma’s new EP, “FREEDOM.”
The song was written as an inspirational anthem in response to the trial and tribulations his family endured; Goma’s parents fled the Rwandan Genocide while pregnant with him. They reached Boston and eventually moved to Canada.
Goma was introduced to music at a very young age through his father, who received a Fulbright Scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Goma picked up the keyboard at the age of 7, but it wasn’t until he turned 12 that he discovered his “core instrument,” the electric bass.
The song starts and ends with an audio clip of a woman, presumably Goma’s mother, talking about carrying Goma. Goma’s soulful voice, joined by an enlivening chorus and catchy beats, makes this song an instant favorite.
“’CAN’T FOLD’ illustrates the feeling I had when leaving the family with next to no money at all to pursue my dream as an artist and businessman,” said Goma. “It also highlights the struggles I endured and some of the many challenges I faced. I came to understand that the sinking feeling in my gut was just a reminder to never give up. That I ‘Can’t Fold.’”
Fans of Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, and the Weeknd should listen to “CAN’T FOLD” and Goma’s new EP, “FREEDOM.”
