Attention all lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and history: Queen of Rhode Island and Kennedy at heart, Elizabeth Gerardi has finally released her song, “Young Love & Old Money.” Told from the perspective of the enigmatic Daisy Buchanan, this striking track puts a personality and a better backstory on the complex socialite that is often shunned by readers for what she did to Jay Gatsby.
To complement the track, a stunning vintage-inspired lyric video was released with Elizabeth wearing her beautiful hair tied in a cherry red bow (I have been known for my bows, headbands, and “Cherry” is one of my nicknames, so it is no wonder I was drawn to this) donning elegant clothing and nails, sparkling jewelry, and a fancy drink to satisfy her expensive taste.
“This is a tricky age. We’re birds stuck in a cage. Wish I could fly away with you” These would probably have to be my favorite lyrics. I am quite the sucker for a cheesy coming of age film, and this would “fit perfectly like milk and honey.”
According to Gerardi’s TikTok this is “For the girls who say they are going to marry for money but are actually hopeless romantics and would never settle for a loveless marriage. For the girls who have cried over a fictional character. For the girls who romanticize The Great Gatsby. For the girls who carefully curate their Instagram feed.” As a former Tumblr girl from the late 2000’s/early 2010’s that cried over fictional characters almost daily, and romanticized many things, including The Great Gatsby, I was shedding tears by the end of the song. If I ever had to teach someone about The Great Gatsby, then I would show them this song. And who knows? Hollywood is remaking the story every few years and like Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” was the soundtrack for the 2013 version, Elizabeth Gerardi’s “Young Love & Old Money” could be featured on the soundtrack of the next remake!
