The earth decides the direction of the stream, but the path created by the stream is forged by its gentle ferocity. Maroulita del Kol has a remarkable ability to bring the listener into a state of relaxation and focus. “The Water,” her debut single from upcoming album Anasana, invokes power with a mesmerizing sound.
The song has a run time of 7:20 yet only contains 8 lines of lyrics within 4 couplets. A message needn’t be a long one to be powerful- sometimes less is more. The artist describes the song as a ‘hymn to the feminine…” a prayer song to the female warrior. The lyrics speak words of affirmation, claiming a never-yielding forward motion, and likening our main character – the warrior – to the water that nurtures her. She is gentle, powerful, and ever-growing.
Maroulita de Kol is a Greek pianist who blends traditional music of her culture with neoclassical tendencies. The piano is the first instrument we hear; it is the backbone of the song. As the song progresses, we hear a handful of instruments that are, at times, difficult to distinguish. The piano trickles forward and continues to serve as the foundation of the track.
The visuals match the tone perfectly. The listener can feel the change in climate, a fog of sound. In the video for “The Water,” we see our feminine warrior in a body of water. She dances with it as one would with a dear friend. The setting changes. A stunning backdrop of a skyline with images of a blue sky and wispy clouds. In the foreground we see our warrior preparing for battle in the sky- a Goddess. There are moments where the character in the water can see the Goddess through a lens of water. Her goal is to become the “giant,” the “beast” she’s meant to be.
