The transition from high school to college is one of the biggest steps we take as we stumble our way through adulthood. Often it comes as a culture shock when moving to a new city. Sophia Marie tells her story of going from LA native to a Georgetown girl in her EP ‘Foreigner’.
The Georgetown student has three songs currently available on streaming platforms. In the song ‘Narcissist’, she shades a very specific archetype native to North West DC. The aspiring politician. Sophia says her inspiration for the song comes from the interactions she has had within the dating scene in Georgetown. Describing the ‘Narcissist’ as an immature “petulant child”. A fun ‘F you’ attitude with instrumentals reminiscent of “You Belong with Me” era T Swift.
‘Venice Beach to DC’ gives the listener a clear picture of who this musician is “…just a girl from across the country” trying to fit in with politician types. In the chorus she sings that she’s got the ‘Legally Blonde’ in her, a reference to the 2001 movie with similar themes. The 20-year-old picks up the pace by using pop punk guitars for this track. One can almost see the montage of study sessions and ‘You can’t sit with us’ scenes as the song hits its peak. The video for ‘Venice Beach to DC’ is currently in the works.
Finally, the title track “Foreigner” continues the ‘someone’s different’ motif. This time her suitors are the foreigners instead of Sophia herself. She cites non-American accents and speaking different languages as alluring factors of these gentlemen. The song demonstrates personal growth in real time, as the artist learns to look past surface level attraction to avoid heartache.
Sophia Marie’s music has a distinct perspective that may not be relatable to all. Those who can relate, will find humor in the story telling along with a dance worthy song. Those who can’t relate to her content, will appreciate the lively musicality.
