Since their inception in 2015, and release of their first album, “as one would exist within the crescendo,” in 2019, Peregrine has been bringing a new brand of emo-inspired rock to the Massachusetts scene and beyond. For the last year, core Peregrine members Nate (vocals), Tom (guitars, bass, and synth), and Bryan (drums) have been digging into material Nate and Tom started creating during the quarantine times of 2020 and 2021 to bring you their latest release, the 10-track, 45-minute, “the awful things we’ve done.” With sweeping guitars, brazen synths, and heartfelt vocals, Peregrine’s arrangements never fail to please, and that still holds true in “the awful things we’ve done.”
With odd time signatures and complex songwriting, all held together by catchy and well-written melodies, Peregrine has created something truly fresh and fabulous with “the awful things we’ve done.” The album blends influences as varied as American Football, At the Drive-in, and Radiohead. Somehow, “the awful things we’ve done” draws inspiration from these acts, but still doesn’t sound exactly like any of them. It’s exciting and inspiring to behold what Nate, Tom, and Bryan have done here, with the standout tracks being “sagittarius A” and “backpack,” both released as singles earlier in 2022.
The heaviness dripping from “all the things we’ve done” may be a lot for some listeners, but if you enjoy some of the acts mentioned earlier and keep an open mind, there is true artistic beauty to be found in the album.
