Most of us believe that somewhere in the world is the right person, just for us, a unique relationship capable of all the command and presence of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, or Neo and Trinity. Behind those feelings of destiny, lay the groundwork for imagining how the world and all its various circumstances fall into place for us to find this special someone.
These concepts and more are explored by Hunter Heflin in his latest single, “CGI.” Inspired by the notion of a virtual world colliding with its real-life counterpart introduced in The Matrix Resurrections, Heflin and co-writer, Ryan Story, worked together to create an environment and a narrative based on the question, “What if you planted a whole relationship in the world of make-believe, and like Neo, made the protagonist self-aware enough to realize it?” The song follows the journey of the protagonist, a character that must choose to exist in a fantasy world with love at his side or to exist in reality without.
Heflin has an impressive following from fans and other music professionals alike, gaining the attention of superstars such as JESSIA, Marc E. Bassy, Stevie Mackey, and legendary hip-hop producer Bricks Da Mane through compelling and melodic storytelling that is commercially appealing while still very approachable for indie fans. In collaboration with Moroccan DJ and Producer, SouMix, Heflin released the impressive dance-influenced “Picasso” earlier this year, and is slated to release a forthcoming EP, “It’s Good To See You Too,” next month.
Listeners are left wondering whether the character in Hunter Heflin’s latest single, “CGI” takes the red pill or the blue pill. “I love leaving room for the listener to make their own interpretations,” says Heflin.
