Ariel Hill’s first single of 2022, “First” examines the reasons why love begins with yourself and exudes outward.
“First” is the lead single from the forthcoming album, Moonstruck, a culmination that represents two years of songwriting and production work for Houston, Texas-based producer, songwriter multi-instrumentalist, and singer, Ariel Hill. She boldly performs lyrics that acknowledge that in the eyes of the one she is with, she should come in second; an observation affirmed by many relationships that suffer when one person believes their self worth is dependent on the value that another might place on them.
Appealing to fans of Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu, the track has a bit of a classic lounge kind of sound, at times contributing to a someone sultry sound to Hill’s vocals, but the overall feel of Neo-Soul, R&B, and Pop conveys a sense of soft, sad, empathy as if in acknowledging this situation is present in the relationship she is also recognizing that things might not work out.
I wanna be second / And you gotta be first / I would be wasting my time for thinking that I could heal all your hurt / Tell me what sets you free baby / And I’ll help you find the key / But don’t go twisting your brain on thinking it could ever be me / I wanna be second, baby / And you, you gotta be first.
