New York-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Patrick J. Smith began A Beacon School in his home studio in 2009, over the years refining the sound as well as the lineup. In the latest single by A Beacon School, “Dot,” the band explores a rhythmic soundscape mingled with spirited dynamic changes. This first release by the band in three hints that there may be a new full-length album on the horizon.
“’Dot’ is a song about seeing patterns in your life emerge but feeling helpless to change them,” says Smith. “The song oscillates between these moments of unfiltered wonder and inspiration, and the immediate skepticism that follows them.”
It’s hard to top the inside scoop from the songwriter. Smith’s description of “Dot” is immaculate because even without Smith’s words describing it, the listener experiences these ‘helpless changes’ and their consequences deeply while engaging with the song. The context is clearly defined and A Beacon School does an excellent job of placing us in this moment with them.
