At just a little over one and a half minutes, the latest single by Australian Alt Rap pioneer glu, “ONAPILL!” has no time to be delicate about the track’s sensitive nature surrounding the topic of drug use. Accompanied by deep 808s and stripped back drums, the track features Minneapolis, Minnesota rapper Mista ooF, who delivers a menacing performance supported by a mostly improvised lowkey understated one-take from glu. In addition to having several as yet unreleased collaborations, glu appeared on Mista ooF’s 2021 EP, Undah 7.
German animator DogWillHunt provides a digital representation of the range of experiences and emotions that one might undergo while in an altered state, supporting the song’s psychedelic beat and use of reversed samples. The overexaggerated features of the characters and the environments they are placed in feel reminiscent of a dark carnival funhouse found in a child’s nightmare.
During the mixing process, glu and Canberra, Australia based producer Voidhood experimented extensively with various other textures and effects that might be more familiar to fans of glu’s maximalist approach, but “ONAPILL!” retains a decidedly minimalist sound for the genre and will appeal to fans of BKTHERULA, and Playboi Carti.
