The old familiar adage states, “No man is an island.” However, in the latest single “Man On An Island,” rapper, singer, producer, and DJ, CRRNT respectfully disagrees; sharing experiences rooted in accountability and personal responsibility to support his position.
With steel drum synths and crashing ocean waves, “Man On An Island” places listeners right in the middle of this isolated environment, beginning with a positive attitude reflected in lyrics like, “See me out here I’m smiling,” and “You know I’m always trying.” The song’s overarching theme guides listeners through a narrative that suggests that being in control of your attitude is one of the ways that an individual can perhaps be compared to an island. As listeners navigate the first verse, we experience a theme similar to “With great power comes great responsibility,” along with the recognition that nothing in life, including its duration, is promised to us.
Whether a man is an island or not, it is understandable that one might feel this way; surrounded by the waters of vulnerability while the world seems to move at its own speed around us even as we attempt to make our mark on it.
And sometimes I feel all alone / And sometimes I’m all on my own / Don’t know what I’m looking for / I’m just doing what’s never been done before
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama; now based out of Kansas City, Kansas, we wonder if CRRNT’s decision to relocate may have come into play here. Or, if after graduating from pharmacy school in 2021, his decision to commit to pursuing music as a career rather than just a hobby may have inspired some of these lyrics.
Certain decisions and commitments can only be made by the individual. Additionally, even though your experiences may be similar to another’s, only you can view and accept these experiences as part of who you are and decide how they affect the individual you will be.
