With a voice as smooth as silk and a grand piano by her side, Washington, D.C. resident and established music journalist Eliza Tebo is hot off the trails of releasing her debut EP of original music, released on April 29, 2022. It is a self-titled collection of jazz standards and pop covers, with complex yet highly listenable melodies. The Eliza Tebo EP also features a beautifully skilled rhythm section supporting Eliza’s incredible vocal skills and comfort behind the ivories. If you enjoy acts such as Norah Jones, Theo Katzman, or Regina Spektor, you’ll feel right at home with Eliza Tebo. Tebo has performed on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” and NPR with Howard University’s Afro Blue/Traces of Blue, as well as The Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, the B.B. King Blues Club (NY) and the Vice President’s official residence. Upon first listen to her EP, it’s not hard to see how Tebo’s resume features such prominent appearances.
While each track on the Eliza Tebo EP is special, a true standout track on the release is the cover of Genesis’ In Too Deep. A truly unique take on the classic, set to a salsa beat, with beautiful brush playing on the drum kit and skillful upright bass playing…all set to the backdrop of Tebo’s enchanting voice and some surprising and effective background vocals towards the end of the track. In Too Deep is just one of five selections on the release, however, and all of them are worthwhile listens. An exciting foray into the musical craft of Eliza Tebo, if her EP is any indication…we will be hearing a lot more from Tebo in the days to come, and all of it will be worth your attention.
