Los Angeles-based pop-punk band Walker Brigade has released their new album “If Only.” This is the band’s first album, following their single “Choker.”
Walker Brigade has been playing live shows together since 2014; the art-punk band is made up of guitarists Tracy Walker and Jeff Charreaux, drummer Craig Tyrka, and bassist Mark Fletcher. They have cited their influences as iconic punk artists like X-Ray Spex, The Soft Boys, and Mission of Burma.
The entire album features 20 tracks, including two covers: “Sand In My Joints” by Wire, and “I’m Tired,” as originally performed by Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles. As a whole, “If Only” sports a cool, alternative, and rebellious punk-rock sound similar to the likes of the Violent Femmes and The Soft Boys.
Songs like “Tower,” “Judy Holliday,” and “Fancy Boots” utilize crunchy guitar sounds and powerful vocals to illustrate the band’s cohesive grasp on the genre. “Disease” and “Choker” really emphasize the band’s love for the punk music of the late 70’s and early 80’s, with catchy choruses and features of the iconic cowbell.
