Canadian indie pop band, Springworks, leaning into some zany, psychedelic sounds that crash and spread like waves on the shore of a beach.
“It is a song that displays our influences more than most or our previous releases I think” the band writes, “specifically the late 90’s early 2000’s feel along the lines of the Charlatans UK, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets. I think we were actually surprised how apparent those influences came through but we’re happy to give a nod to that era”.
The electrified funky sounds of the synthesizers shine through most of the song, echoing and filling the sonic space with a poppy ambience. With the vocals blending into the mix deeply, they come across more as added instrumentation rather than being lyrically forward. Towards the end of the song (around the 4-minute mark), the synthesizers release just enough of their hold to make room for spoken word samples only to swell back up for an extended outro.
The effect of the song mixes indie electronica compositions with some avant-garde tendencies in the selected samples and extended musical breaks. It sits in the pocket the whole way through (a possible connection to its namesake) and allows the samples of people speaking to pull it just off course enough to taste some musical chaos before finally letting go of it all at the very end. A nice balance of arrhythmic approaches to vocal mixing with pop stylings that keep you captivated from start to finish.
