Los Angeles based psychedelic rock band, Maple Mars, have finally arrived at the moment of release for their new album Someone’s Got To Listen from Big Stir Records this Friday, July 22. The album currently sports two leading singles “Gliding” and “Goodbye California”, which tease big things to come from the band’s latest effort.
“Gliding” feels larger-than-life with its cymbal-heavy drums, dense call-and-response vocals and stacked harmonies, and a drive that is uncompromising. If the title of the album is a sort of goal or marker of success for the band, this song alone warrants significant attention since it is so captivating. While the exterior of the song is electric and flowing, the interior lyrical content holds onto the album’s central themes of self-reflection and transition. The motion is smooth, as the title alludes, almost despite the high-octane energy.
Meanwhile, “Goodbye California” is a slower jam that still manages an expansive energy, but with more balladry as the band embraces a Beatles-like quality in their approach to merging pop and psychedelic influences. As they crash through a myriad of textures, there’s still a thoughtfulness that permeates each note allowing them to fall with style like waves crashing upon the warm shore of a beach.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
