The “girl-next-door” archetype takes a turn in 19-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Jennie Harluk’s new music video for her single, “She’s Got You.” This is Harluk’s seventh single since her debut in 2021 with “Fire.”
As an RBCxMusic First Up artist, Jennie Harluk has turned heads in the Canadian pop music scene! She has already been featured on the Pop All Day, It’s a Bop, Renegade Folk, Live Country, and Equal Canada playlists on Spotify, and is coming back with more new music.
“She’s Got You” is a heartbreaking, alt-pop tune with a retro music video to match. The video is full of home recordings, illustrating grainy nostalgia for a past romantic relationship. Despite the track and video conveying the sadness and suffering of a break-up, Harluck gives a silver lining of hope, showing how pain will always come to an end.
“The girl in this song was written as the kind of person I wish I could be sometimes,” writes Harluk. “I wish I could cover up heartbreak with nonchalant comments or come across unbothered when hurt. But that’s just not me. So this song is my way to vicariously live through a melody. It’s sarcastic, petty, lonely, angry, and a heart jerker all at once. I think it embodies some of the stages of grief in a breakup and the different coping mechanisms of dealing.”
