Commercial pop musician, Francis Aud, is back with the cheeky new single “Used To” which brings some nu-disco flavor to the forefront. With funky bass lines and star-spangled synthesizers, it becomes impossible not to groove when he has brought the dance-floor vibes to us.
“You made up your mind to leave me behind”, he sings just before the slick chorus kicks in. He follows up with a series of pointed questions, “Whatcha gonna do? / Tell me what’s the move? / Who’s gonna be there for you?”. Despite the more somber inspiration of being left by a loved one, there’s something fun about poking logistical holes in that person’s grass-is-greener vision of the future, and Francis Aud highlights this to entertaining effect. By the end of the chorus, his string of questions concludes with the titular thesis statement, “You know the truth / there’s no one / Cause no one loves you better than I used to”.
Since his first release back in 2017 he has gradually moved away from his retro-soul beginnings and has been writing music that he describes as “FONK™ MUSIC”; a signature blend of funk and pop. “Used To” continues to push into this new pop subcategory following in the footsteps of contemporary acts like Silk Sonic and Dua Lipa. With a sense of fun, Francis Aud takes the blues-soaked inspiration and transforms it into a good time that is danceable and full of life.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
