Vancouver-based songwriter, Syd Warwick, is continuing the trek towards her debut EP Sad Astra with the second leading single “Mercury”. Combining some atmospheric (almost spooky) synthesized ambience against the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar, the song is full of magical and surreal vibrations.
“‘Mercury’ is a journey through the grief that comes with processing family trauma, and the difficulty of having to cut ties with people that you love. Even though there’s fear, uncertainty and pain within the process of letting go, there’s also a first step towards empowerment—the kind that comes when we face the world as an individual, belonging to no one but ourselves.
This empowerment comes through potently with the accompanying music video for the single which sees Warwick traversing through a forest and dancing with a coven of dancers in black dresses in an open field. Through this creative community of dancing women, her new found-family, she finds a different kind of strength that feels warm, kind, and (possibly) a little wiccan. In this case, any witch-like imagery has a soft, healing energy that is a welcome subversion of the maligned, misogynist stereotypes of witches as evil entities.
“‘Mercury’ is about being your own advocate, understanding the cyclical nature of abuse and trauma within a family system and remembering that you are so much more than where you come from. It serves as a reminder to put yourself first, else you may never be able to move forward and become the person that you’re meant to be.”

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
