Irish electronic musician and producer, Conor Kelly (aka Chósta, pronounced coast – ah) has teamed up with Jape for a new single titled “The Object Spoke to Me”. Full of melancholy and nostalgia, it’s a song that’s far more interested in a feel or effect than it is in structure.
The various samples are thickened with reverb allowing simple things like ticking clocks to feel grandiose and expansive. The sonic atmosphere feels viscous as the beat trudges through a palpable tension. The nostalgia stems primarily from the light synth that bubbles in the background mimicking a baby xylophone or piano that could lull one to sleep in an instant.
“The track is intended to be uplifting and dream-like” Chósta says, “capturing the boundless possibility of life when you put your mind to something and find the beauty in the process.” That possibility feels like it expands infinitely in all directions, which makes the wandering nature of the beat feel more focused on each slow, forward step rather than getting lost in the musical collage that can feel, at times, like an endless abyss.
Within that void where time and space slowdown in reaction to overwhelming swell of the music’s philosophy, emotions find themselves suspended. One could feel any number of things as they make their way across it like the object of a flowing river: fear, joy, contentment, sadness. It’s all sitting right there in the water, but regardless of what the listener brings to, it is the thickening of these emotions that get to the heart of what that object could be saying.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
