23-year-old Korean-American artist min.a has created a promising musical identity since her first official release in 2018 — but her successes haven’t come without difficulties. The insecurities she continues to experience throughout her artistic journey are laid bare in “company,” the emotional heart of her newly-released EP, i hope i get well soon.
The musical influences of “company” call back to her most recognized song to date, the experimental ballad “b(ye).” The piano-centric track contrasts electropop compositions like “would u rather” and “headache”, while accentuating the EP’s thematic elements of searching for one’s personal identity, the feeling of being chronically misunderstood, and colliding with a stressful reality.
In “company,” min.a expresses intense feelings of wanting to “be somebody” to not only herself, but to the people around her, as well. But no matter how much she tries, the ones she wants to be remembered by just can’t seem to stay around.
Min.a speaks to the gut-wrenching truth of a loved one being unable or unwilling to attain the level of connection that you crave. “Whoever I wanted to be,” she sings, “You just didn’t understand me.”
The ability to articulate the realizations one makes as they grow older and experience the world from a new perspective has been a hallmark of her career. No matter what comes after graduation, min.a will surely continue to provide her audience with deep cuts that they can turn to for both relatability and musical excellence.
