Fab The Duo, a queer alt-rock group based in LA, have just released their debut album Mascara Revolution.
Broadway performers have a very distinct vocal quality to them. There’s a power, a fullness in their resonance even when singing softly. The two vocalists in Fab The Duo remind me of the kind of tenors that are usually heard singing “I’m Alive” or “Wait For it” on a stage. Classically trained voices on Alt-POP instrumentals? I’M. SOLD.
At the heart of the Duo’s musicianship is their vocals. The two tenors demonstrate range, technical prowess, and versatility. Their unplugged performances online are truly a treat. These two voices and a guitar will cast a spell on you. However, the real treat lies in their recorded music.
Mascara Revolution, the Duo’s newest album, features ten songs with influences that range from DIVA house to alternative rock. Track Seven “No More Sad Songs” highlights Greg and Brendan’s Rock chops with soaring high notes and pop-punk guitar chords. While A song like ‘Chill Pill’ showcases the versatility of the group. The song Pulls the audience onto the dancefloor with epic dancability, then halfway has a vocal break that slows things down only to then give us a round bridge, with vocal lines beautifully staggered leading into an electronic bass drop that would shake the most seasoned raver.
No artist can be defined by a single song but if we HAD to choose a song to say “hey This right here is Fab The Duo” it’d be “Hand to Hold”. If we were to draw a line where at one side lies the Rock side and the other shows the party bass and drum vibes “Hand to Hold” sits right at the center. The entire track makes you move with an infectious beat, no distorted guitars on this one, but the synths and bass use riffs that attack with the ferocity of a metal guitarist. Every song on Mascara Revolution is worthy of your dance party playlist, in fact some might be worthy of your headbangers one too!
Fab The Duo yet another act that has taken genres that used to have defined lines and blurred them rendering genres unrecognizable. Fab The Duo can only be defined by hyphens. Alt-pop, alt rock, pop-rock, vocal-edm-house-rock… Fab The Duo are what they are. A good freaking time.
