Norwegian jazz musician and guitarist, Hedvig Mollestad, has teamed up with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra for her latest single “Maternity Suite”. A massive 10-minute epic, the new track is bursting at the seams with a mix of jazz instrumentation with an alternative rock attitude.
This is wonderfully loud approach to jazz that feels explosive and experimental all the same time. It truly edges the line between form and chaos, and the propulsive rhythms (particularly from the drums and guitar) brim with an exciting electricity that is utterly captivating. Following in the footsteps of “All Flights Cancelled” and “On the Horizon, Part 2”, this is the final (and completely excellent) peek into Mollestad’s latest album Maternity Beat.
“‘Maternity Suite’ is that grandiose prog-suite rising from megalomaniac ideas when I first started working on this music,” says Mollestad. “I wanted this last piece to be as triumphant and powerful as the euphoria of rightfully being let loose from something holding you back, marching united forward towards life at its most joyful! I wanted it to embrace the full power of the whole band altogether, at the same time I wanted to create a journey through shapes and landscapes, of course containing heavy riffs and multiple maxblast-power-solos, to embrace the full freedom!”

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
