New York-based recording artist and cultural activist, Lachi, sets herself apart with her latest single, “Black Girl Cornrows”. Reveling in the freedom that comes with self-expression and self-description, she takes to the endlessly danceable club beats to show off and strut her confidence down the catwalk.
There’s a level of power and prowess that comes through the calm, cool, and collected vocals that list various fantastical elements of Black fashion, while consistently coming back to the iconic cornrows from which she draws that power. With some slick verses from Yvie Oddly and QuestionATL, it has plenty of swagger that also touts a grassroots musical activism.
“‘Black Girl Cornrows’ celebrates my declaration as a black blind artist” says Lachi. “The track talks about how empowering the act of self-description can be. Beyond using it to help blind folks understand a person’s looks, it is also an avenue for self-expression – identifying one’s race, gender-identity, vibe-identity, and within seconds can bring to light who you are and what you stand for. The intention is to make self-description – ‘Lachi, she/her, black girl, cornrows’ – as commonplace an identifier as the pronoun.”

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
