Kingston, New York-based singer-songwriter, Matt Pond (otherwise known as The Natural Lines) has released his latest single “A Scene That Will Never Die”. Along with a beautifully animated music video, he plucks heartstrings like gentle guitar notes with a story of long-distance love and a romantic sense of escape.
The monochromatic visuals are drawn entirely by hand which automatically bring a sense of nostalgia with them. The two characters use childhood staple of technology using two cans connected by a string to talk to each other but being in their adult years brings a sense of heaviness to their conversations. As they pull on their respective sides of the string, they make their way to each other through forests and herds of ghosts.
Against the indie musical backdrop, there’s a sense of triumph that comes through when they finally arrive at each other. Snippets of lyrics written in cursive flash across the screen and the couple swirls into oblivion along with their dog. Perhaps this is the start of something new, or perhaps this is something that has always been. Either way, Pond brings a classic, analog happy ending to a digital era where dating feels near-impossible feat.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
