Pasadena-based house music producer and singer, Ayeja, takes an intimate tour of the nightlife found in The Big Apple in her latest music video for “On My Own”.
The song starts off in classic style with a slick, propulsive beat followed by light touches on the synthesizers that create an electric ambience. Against an opening montage of the New York City skyline, there’s a romanticism that comes through with ease. As the beat drops out and Ayeja brings her light, sultry vocals into the mix for with the repetitious mantra, “If you’re gonna break my heart / I’m better off on my own”. There’s some nice rhythmic play with the word that bring a sense life to the otherwise synthesized musical landscape, and the mantra carries her into the night. Specifically, into the club.
As the beat alludes, there is plenty of dancing to be done before the night is over as we watch Ayeja dance against neon lights, in front of concert stages, and among hordes of stranger-friends. The video takes some psychedelic turns with kaleidoscopic shapes and colors between b-roll shots of disco balls, women in heels, smoking, and more party-centric imagery. As the song’s main chorus kicks in, there’s a horn section that takes centerstage making for a distinct tone that keeps the party going.
“On My Own” is one of four new tracks from Ayeja’s Sugar and Spite EP, available now on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The accompanying music video is also available on YouTube.
Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
