Take a Journey with Thyra Hilden in “Lucid Dreampop”
Looking for some new and relatable dreamy pop music to chill out to or even make you reflect? Check out the versatile EP that is Lucid Dreampop by Danish visual artist Thyra Hilden for a simple, but sophisticated 17 minute experience of sensual, Nordic existentialism. Great for fans of Gracie Abrams, Lights, The Marias, and Men I Trust.
Inspired by Lucid Dreaming: Controlling the Storyline of Your Dreams, Thyra draws inspiration from the rare mental state of hallucinating the fine line between being awake and dreaming. Thyra’s brother tragically died of schizophrenia, a disease where dreams and reality merge. This is a reason why paradoxes, illusions, and existentialism are important to her in her art.
There are a lot of pop songs about couple issues, so this EP is refreshing to hear songs about friendship and finding yourself. Right off the bat, “Who Am I” is a quick opening track with mysterious beats and lyrics about longing to fit in. Similar vibes follow in “All Shadows Are One.” Things speed up a little bit with her version of “Show Me How” originally by Men I Trust, making the listener want to dance. To close off the EP, are my two favorites off the album, “I Miss You Watching Me” and “Friend.” These tracks remind me of songs you might hear in an early to mid 2000’s movie showing a sped up montage of traffic on the highways to show time passing. Overall this EP feels like slowly passing through a mirror.
