Rachel Burns has recently released a new single and video, “Mansplainin’” – illuminating “the dilemma of women everywhere”.
Pop/Soul Singer-Songwriter Rachel Burns is a Washington D.C.-based artist who has recently released a new relatable single and video, “Mansplainin’” – “a fun, upbeat soul song that illuminates the dilemma of women everywhere: having to endure another exhausting episode of Mansplainin’.”
Burns is known for writing songs that combine life’s humor and heartbreak, fusing together different genres such as blues, country, and jazz, with theatrical twists. She writes mostly feminist satire, cabaret/jazz/soul music, she says, inspired by iconic singers and entertainers such as Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, and the like.
This track and video’s production value truly shows as Burns takes you on a creative journey. The video depicts the song, playing out a fantasy situation about revenge, full of characters that double as background singers. The song is extremely catchy, and Burns certainly captures your attention. The song also shows her vocal range and musical talent.
“I think it’s important for women’s voices to be heard, because we were conditioned for many generations to have our voice sent through our male counterpart … men took credit for a lot of our ideas through history,” she says. It’s about time for us to just stop allowing the man to take charge and use our voices and not be afraid of it, and not be shy about letting people know our opinions, because our opinions matter.”
Burns’s EP What a Nasty Woman, comes out on July 7, containing songs she wrote from 2018-on. “I’m just really excited to present it to the world,” she says, “It’s time for people to hear these truths with humor.” In celebration of the launch, you can catch Rachel Burns’ “What a Nasty Woman Show” at The Pie Shop in Washington D.C. on May 31st.
