With their latest EP, The People We Thought We Knew, Alex Maes & The Connection bring some ethereal funk to the forefront.
Made up of four beautifully distilled songs, the single “YOU” leads the charge with a captivating mix of R&B backbeat against prog rock styled guitar lines. It’s expansive and epic scale give Maes plenty of space to let her vocals soar comfortably upon the steady waves of music. Echoes and reverb seem to travel miles before finding something to bounce off.
As the EP’s closer, it feels like a blast off into a spacey void that shines with a kaleidoscopic color that will paint you in a variety of moods. There’s melancholy, there’s warmth, there’s uncertainty, there’s comfort – it all coexists nicely within the band’s mix of influences.
For fans of easy listening or jazzy rearrangements of genre, this collection of songs is a nice treat. There are so many things floating in the band’s unique sound that it is sure to touch upon something for everyone. Just follow the steady groove and let the vocals push you into a fantastic freefall through ethereal vibrations. It’s a journey, and a plunge, worth taking.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
