Trust Your Gut is the first studio album that the punk-adjacent band has put out in three years. It comes on the heels of their home-recorded album, Warm Blanket.
The band, fronted by Lauren Denitzo, is starting to take the shift from Worriers to Warriors with this new album. This album brings an energy shift to the group that was first introduced on Warm Blanket, but really takes root here. There is a bite to the album, sharp and stinging.
Denitzo takes us through an old relationship of theirs that has developed a bitter taste to it. They take us through the stages of grief of this old relationship, really leaning into this fighting, fueling anger. But from this anger comes a new path.
Denitzo has always been forthright about who they are, going back to their 2015 track ‘They/ Them/ Theirs’, and seen in every aspect of their art, from their zines to their music. However, this change is merely an evolution of the Worriers we’re all used to. The anger is backed by soft guitar chords and rolling drums. The music is not aggressive, but instead is calculated with their emotions. This balance is best illustrated on the track “Top 5”. There’s an annoyed acceptance of how their life is spiraling, but that acceptance is punctuated by the ending repetition of “Gonna dance on his grave,” referring to an ambiguous fascist who is ruling their life with an iron fist.
