Aboynamedblu Seethes Rage in New EP “I Heard You Tried To Fight The Sky”

Graceful piano and soft, breathy vocals ring in aboynamedblu’s new EP I Heard You Tried To Fight The Sky. The opening track, “Super Grassy” finds an aesthetic balance between the likes of Frank Ocean and Bon Iver before cutting loose for a tidal wave of sound during the bridge.

As you continue on this musical journey, there is an electric sense of pulse that rings through each song; even the softer moments get swept up in the current as the mix of digital and analog instruments come crashing together with a unique resonance that feels like the softer pop of Sam Smith meets the loud, eclectic noises of LCD Soundsystem. “I became obsessed with the sky and this concept that it has the power to determine our human experience,” he writes about the album’s inspiration. “I wrote most of the project over a few weeks during winter this year. I moved into a place outside of the city and it gave me the chance to really tap in and unlearn a lot of things that felt like second nature and write from a place that was more objective.”

As the EP ends with “Only for Display”, it feels clear that this is a this is a contemplative mind full of heavy thoughts. Sometimes, they make a more joyful noise, but the heart of the album is soaked with a deep sadness that resonates paradoxically strong during the softest moments. “During the time of writing this record” he writes, “I was trying to come to terms with my place in this realm. Accepting the natural order of things with more.”
