The new LA-based R&B artist and DMV alum, Aleeta, seems to be bursting with potential with her first single, “Permission,” a soulful slow jam with a spacious groove that will have you swaying before the opening beat even comes in.
Driven by a romantically melodic piano, there’s a sensual feel that pulls you in instantly with its “date night” vibes. This is reinforced lyrically as she sings, “You know what you could have / You can get comfortable in my space” during the chorus. There is plenty of space for all the love and intimacy one could ask for within the alluring, ethereal composition.
Aleeta states a clear desire for physical connection with a significant other as she assertively presses that “I want it now / I don’t need permission / You got me waiting / Achin’ in affliction.” She’s arrived at this moment to get exactly what she wants, and she’s built the perfect soundtrack to tip the scales in her favor.
Aleeta has also treated us to a brand-new music video (released on September 17) that brings her sensuality to the forefront. Modulating between the feel of found footage and pop culture forward cinematography, we get a glimpse into her craving for sexual intimacy with shots of her dancing in her bedroom (often accompanied by a special friend) or feeling herself on the beach. It’s a beautiful manifestation of all the feel-good vibes that “Permission” puts forward musically.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
