Washington, D.C. area writer, producer, and rapper, ARIA is at it again, delivering a layered lyrical narrative on top of a deceptively simple and catchy beat. A decidedly seductive and suggestive track, ARIA’s “Fashion Sense” could be a metaphor for the way fashion is such an integral aspect of hip-hop culture just as easily as it could be describing the dominance dancing between two divas, who thoroughly enjoy the allure, the glamour, and the bragging rights.
The song is meticulously structured lyrically, in a way that makes listening to the whole track the only way to appreciate this complex and dynamic relationship that feels somehow one-sided on both sides. Still, if there’s one line that helps capture the swagger:
“She still call me gorgeous even though that shit a fact.”
There is no question about it. It must be accepted. And it is, thoroughly, as both parties are fully aware. Not only is it accepted, but celebrated, and the song’s subjects would clearly not have it any other way. They’re both playing the same game, and they love the game.
Musically, “Fashion Sense” has a foot-tapping, head-nodding drum track with a nuanced melody that is further complemented by carefully curated sound effects. This utilitarian arrangement is still fully captivating and reinforces those attitudes conveyed lyrically. After experiencing for yourself, you may want to develop a bit more “Fashion Sense” of your own.
