Broken Fires’ latest album ‘Hymns’ is a secular ode to love on earth.
The London-based trio Broken Fires uploaded their first track in 2014 on New Year’s Day, and was instantly met with success. They quickly released their debut album, which sold out and lead to a string of tours that culminated in a sold-out show on a boat in the river Thames. The trio took time off to work on secondary projects, they are back with their second album ‘Hymns”.
The project comes with “heart, bravery and serious weight. If you like your melodies big, your lyrics honest, and have no fear of a pop song that takes a completely unexpected turn, then get involved,” they said.
Parts of the album were recorded in a converted chapel. Though not a religious band, ‘Hymns’, “the album stays true to its title as a collection of songs of praise – for the people the band love, the friends they have lost and their homeland of Wales.”
“We’re not a religious band” explains guitarist Tom Stephens, “but we were attracted to the idea of repurposing the word to capture the essence of the record. Just like hymns, these tracks are simple folk songs. Some are sad, others hopeful.”
