Ever the definition of groove and funk, Connie Danger returned on Friday, October 7th with single “Daddy’s Gotta Funk” and an accompanying music video.
What do you make of an encounter with death? Obviously, a sexy retro future extravaganza. In “Daddy’s Gotta Funk,” Connie takes on the character of an ex-disco king past his prime as he makes the choice between giving in and ending it all or continuing to do what he was born to do (hit the dance floor).
The song’s retro-future pop beat and hypnotizing “Ooh, Daddy Daddy” are the perfect backdrop as you indulge in the dancer’s thinly-veiled dread. And the VHS-style video experience. — conceptualized and edited by Connie from his bedroom — has it all: disco balls, pink mimes, and a fever in the hips, all in outer space.
As the track reaches its epic bridge, the viewer’s sympathy for the bygone character also reaches its peak. “They look at me like my time is up,” Connie laments, “Oh, like I’m past the point of being loved.” But in the end, the indomitable need to dance wins out, and Daddy lives to see another day: “When that Grim Reaper guts me / he’ll do it with my pelvis still thrusting / and thrusting.” There’s no better way to celebrate this final victory than with an epic sax solo.
