Indie rocker and rapper, Gio, is getting back on track with a new single titled “Remember,” which pulses with the energy of early 2000’s rap rock but with a softer, pop edge. The Worchester, Massachusetts-based musician uses this unique intersection of aesthetics for a thoughtful song that excavates a depressed mind.
From the opening notes and lyrics, the overall sound is reminiscent of a less frantic Linkin Park, where absolute anger and rage are halved, leaving room for more contemplation amidst the depression and anxiety. “I gave everything I had / How do I get back on track?” he sings through the chorus, giving us an initial glimpse into the defeatist state of amnesia he’s found himself in, “I can’t remember that / I can’t remember anything at all / I really think I lost my mind.”
Heading into the verses, we get to see more of Gio’s rap abilities as he cycles through rhymes about being mentally exhausted amidst the grind of life. He manages an impressive energy through these lyrics, which keep the song upbeat until a big dropout of the drums for the chorus where the guitar and bass hold down an electric, yet ethereal drive. There is some anger that makes its way out before moving aside for the more depressed lyrics of the chorus, which sustain and linger in space with more potency.
