Liverpool-born and Madrid-bred musician Ellie Moon has returned with her new single “Don’t Date Me”, along with its striking music video.
Described as “the lyrical and melodical love-child of Jarvis Cocker and Gwen Stefani,” Moon grabs your attention immediately as we are met with a pink frenzy of a dinner party. Her lyrics and the song’s composition are catchy and fitting.
“The inspiration behind the lyrics of this track is what really drove us to write ‘Don’t Date Me’,” she says. “I had gone through a string of these weird ‘situationships’ and it left me feeling like nobody would ever want to go out with me ever again! So instead of feeling sorry for myself, in true Ellie Moon fashion, I decided to write a song and turn my feelings completely the other way. I imagined the lyrics as a series of self aware text messages I was sending to a so-called ex acknowledging and highlighting how rubbish it is to date someone indifferent and selfish when it comes to love.”
The video turns dark when it is revealed that Moon has poisoned her guests, now dressed in black and delving into a cake with her bare hands – a stark contrast to the girl we are introduced to in the beginning singing “Maybe we should take a break…”.
This video is the right amount of spooky for October, and the song emits a comforting dream pop feel with lyrics that many can relate to.
