Brutal and forceful, doom metal band, Mares of Thrace, are here to melt faces with their new album The Exile which has the feel of a mighty ship braving stormy waters. In proper doom style, each song is slow, lurching, and heavy like massive waves on the ocean that will bombard you into submission.
The song with the quickest chops is also the leading single from the album “In All Her Glory” which tosses and turns to oblivion between time signatures, pushing partially into the prog metal territory. Despite the cleanly production on the guitar and drums, the song (and the entire album) is tumultuous to fantastic effect with Thérèse Lanz laying down incredibly powerful screams to lead the charge.
“The album and short story are about being cursed to wander without a home for all time. The making of the record is a little cursed. It spanned one family death, one near-death, and a full-blown pandemic. I’m relieved more than anything, to birth this monster into the universe,” explains Lanz.
And sense of being lost feels so clear in the way the music naturally writhes and thrashes about. With no clear sense of direction where onward is the only instruction, there is a helplessness that manifests in the form of pure, stubborn aggression that will captivate you before dragging you into the depths of oceanic hell.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
