Suzie-Lou Kraft and Nick Wolf comprise Nick & June, an independent dream-pop duo from Nuremberg, Germany, who have recently released their newest EP, Beach Baby, Baby (May 12).
This comes after the release of singles “Anything But Time”, “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”, “Lip Sync to Love Songs”, their cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, and “Hugh Grant & His Consequence”, all on the EP. The album opens with a gentle piano intro, “Bonjour Tristesse”, and closes like end credits of a film with a wistful reimagining of David Bowie’s “Starman”. “I have always been a big Bowie fan, so it was clear that there would be a Bowie cover at some point,” Kraft says. “The story of the ‘Starman’ fit beautifully into the EP and we immediately had the idea of how to pack our sound and aesthetic into the arrangement.”
“We have always been inspired by various things to write our songs and stories, from French New Wave to movies by Sofia Coppola, Noah Baumbach, Wes Anderson, Xavier Dolan or Greta Gerwig,” says Wolf. “During the pandemic, we watched many classics of film and all-time favorites… Maybe that’s why the overall concept of the EP has a cinematic touch.”
Beach Baby, Baby demonstrates the duo’s ability to weave their musical and vocal talent by diving deeper into textures, subtle melodies, and lyrical creation, Wolf explains. “We wanted to paint the songs in all their facets with melody, lyrics, sound aesthetics.” The EP utilizes dark reverb guitars, and the paired voices of Nick and Suzie-Lou Kraft lead the listener through a meditative journey.
Nick & June’s dreamy indie pop/rock is for fans of artists like Beach House, Belle and Sebastian, Angus & Julia Stone, and Bon Iver.
