Andrés Costureras, otherwise known as the shapeshifting enigma Pshychotic Beats, takes on a more uplifting tone with his latest single “IT’S ABOUT TIME”. Self-described as “if Trent Reznor produced the Pet Shop Boys”, it’s a song that maintains a sense of aloofness but with a more propulsive beat and a Bowie-esque approach to melody.
Working towards his new album, Festering, this is our latest glimpse into what Pshycotic Beats has in mind for the scale of this project. It’s pulls clear influence from Robyn’s now iconic, moody party anthem “Dancing On My Own” as well as the synth-pop euphoria of Depeche Mode. It’s a song that finds some levity amid the darkness – to seek out a fun night of dancing despite the weight of the world.
“I have a personality disorder and I’m recovering from a major depressive episode that almost killed me” Costureras reflects. “I had been lost and suicidal for 10 years but now I am happy, I enjoy life. To all those suffering from mental illness, I want to say that no matter how desperate you are, there is always treatment, possibilities, and a chance for the light to overcome the darkness. Ask for help and fight. Everything will pass. Nothing is permanent. Neither is the darkness, light will eventually come out again.”
Continuing off the success of “Hammering Noises” earlier this year and “Killer Shangri-lah” which was featured on the hit BBC show, Killing Eve, it’s clear that Pshycotic Beats is here to stay with a supercharged catalogue of moody beats and atmospheric effects that are sure to keep us hanging on every note. If you haven’t jumped on board yet, then it’s about time you did.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
