As U.S. Army Captain and indie recording artist Jon Richie has discovered these past few years, one of the advantages to developing a musical career while serving in the military is the down time it has afforded him to cultivate his craft while being deployed in foreign territories.
Raised in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, but born in Baltimore, Jon Richie and his brothers grew up in a home where their shared passions for both sports and music were able to bloom. He grew up taking piano lessons and playing baseball and basketball. At age 13, Jon taught himself guitar and joined a band like his older brother. When he was not fulfilling his duties, sleeping, or working out, he created his own style of beats on his computer, which he dubbed “pop hip-hop” and “happy hip-hop.”
Originally, “Give It To Ya” was not supposed to be released. However, after hearing pieces, his fans and friends would not stop bothering him until this petty post-breakup anthem was included on the album. Glad that worked out in the end!
This laid-back vibe song about truly not giving a damn about a breakup and getting out of a toxic environment pairs well with a random end of summer drive.
