Indie pop artist Kaz Moon releases the first single “A lot to explain” from his forthcoming project ST*R *NISE.
The staccato of the guitar and the descending chords provide an eerie feeling of trepidation in “A lot to explain.” The vocals feel kind of blasé as the lyrics describe a scenario in which the artist appears to be in the middle of, pulled by both sides.
“This might have been the first thing I ever recorded after moving to New York in 2021,” says Kaz. “I remember working on it in my new apartment, which at the time was really cursed looking. The previous tenant was some kind of alcoholic. It had like two decaying couches facing each other, just a really cursed environment. Then I made this.”
Listeners can imagine, and many can relate to, having left everything behind only to find themselves in less than desirable circumstances.
“A lot to explain” is something of a new sound for Kaz, supporting a “conversational, naturalistic songwriting, which continues to mature.” It sets expectations for other tracks from the ST*R *NISE project to contain the same “punchy futuristic pop driven by guitars and laced with deep-fried samples of unknown origin.”
Although “A lot to explain” feels vaguely familiar in its parts, how it all comes together in such a congruent and complete thought is part of the magic of Kaz Moon’s sound. There are moments of ear candy dispersed throughout the casual verses and a driving breakdown that provides a rocky edge to the otherwise pop infused production.
