England based alternative rock band, Amoeba Teen, is back with a brand new self-titled album led by the single “New Material World”. Bursting with electric energy, the album keeps the rock and roll energy of the album’s predecessor Medium Wave while pushing into new sonic territory.
“This album is the first one where we’ve recorded live as a four-piece, capturing the energy of the band performance Amoeba Teen are famed for” the band notes about the recording process. And it comes across clearly, each song feeling like it could be airlifted into a live venue with ease. There’s an authenticity to the sound that escapes the clutches of a sophomore slump caused by overproduction of songs. Instead, the band relies on their natural energy and chemistry to drive their sound forward.
And nowhere on the album is this more clearly heard than “New Material World” which gradually palm mutes its way into your heart with heartwarming lyrics that define love as the driving force in a world driven by material possessions.
“It was a deliberately self-titled album because it was a real band effort to capture the live performance and shape the subsequent arrangements and vocal harmonies,” the band explains. “It has been a labour of love over two disrupted years – trying to rehearse the songs and then being forced to wait due to COVID lockdowns”. So, if you’re looking for some good, authentic rock and roll vibes, this is definitely an album for you to check out.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
