Kevin George, a young Connecticut-based alternative R&B artist, recently released his single “IF LOOKS COULD KILL,” along with its entertaining music video that channels the concept of Netflix’s Russian Doll.
The song’s epic sonic opening consists of George’s smooth vocals as the camera zooms out on what the viewer can infer is George’s apartment building, which gives off summer vibes with a bright sky and greenery. The title boldly appears like an old-fashioned movie.
George looks around after climbing down a set of stairs, singing, “If your looks could kill / swear I’d D-I-E / stick around for thrills / don’t switch up on me” and continues with the chorus. A young woman walking by catches his eye, but when he turns his head and looks back after a split second, she is replaced by a man dressed in black with his fingers in the shape of a gun pointed at George. The man “shoots” George (also signaling the beat drop), but then he suddenly finds himself in his bed, confused as to what just happened.
The track and video emulate an air of fun – it is upbeat and danceable, as George is known to merge R&B with pop elements.
He walks down his stairs once more and sees her again, but this time he is seemingly struck by a car, which is quickly interrupted by George who finds himself in bed…again. He jumps right back up and runs to a park after flailing to put on a shirt, and sees her there. The camera spins around him, mirroring his confusion.
Men play baseball during the song’s chorus as George runs toward her. The cinematography becomes somewhat slapstick as the camera holds the ball’s perspective, and we watch as George is struck in the head, somehow landing yet again in his bed.
He spirals down his building’s stairs, determined to find this woman. He spots her at the pool, but falls in! Oh no! It’s a good thing he wakes up in his bed again!
George seems defeated, but we follow him to an exhilarating carnival scene, where the two lock eyes, then hands.
This fun, time loop concept video certainly encapsulates George’s infatuation.
