“Misogyny in modern pop music is often glamourised,” says UK neo-soul and adult contemporary artist Kohla. “So I wrote ‘Bedroom’ to counteract this. I wanted to honour romantic and respectful sex.”
In the vein of the sultry sounds of artists like Sabrina Claudio or Paula Cole, the BBC Radio 1 Hot List artist, Kohla opts to write about a relationship she was in where she felt “cherished and respected.”
“Lyrically, I wanted to highlight the beauty of being loved deeply, with body and sex positive lyrics ‘every second paradise in your bedroom’”
“Bedroom” serves these sensual sensations musically with an overarching atmospheric ambience comfortably pillowed between rhythmic kick drum hits and finger snaps. The keys contribute whole adding to the song’s sense of longing and desire echoing between Kohla’s reverberated vocal delivery.
Although her initial influences come from legendary 60s artists such as such as Sam Cooke and Etta James, Kohla worked with longtime creative partner Dave Lloyd from Stillhound for production, “where the track takes a dreamy 2000’s pop / r&b influence.” She goes on to mention they experimented a lot with various sounds and vocal layers inspired by everything from Justin Timberlake, All Saints, and The Pussycat Dolls to John Newton’s “Amazing Grace”
“Bedroom” is steamy, and passionate. Filled with all the right feels the careful orchestration, the desired affect is certainly achieved.
