Utah based singer songwriter, Madam Bandit, gets intimate and confessional with her latest single “Lie to Me”. Steeped in haunting electronic bedroom pop vibes, she creates an atmosphere of fantasy and regret tinged with an alluring melancholy.
From the start, Madam Bandit’s breathy vocals take center stage with the sensation of someone whispering in your ear. It’s spine tingling in the way it takes hold right away without significant force. Her power grows with her restraint as the listeners is slowly chipped away leaving us bare for the emotional wreckage to come.
“I want you want me so bad / I don’t care if you lie to me” she finally reveals in the buildup towards the chorus. She toys with our sense of desire as she draws us in with the sensual nature of her vocals. With pop-sensible vocal flourishes in the background, she lays out an abstract dreamscape which she commands with seemingly little effort. She leaves space for us to fill in our own fantastical lies and escapes, but never relinquishes total control.
If you recall the minimalist approach that Lorde took to pop music in her first album Pure Heroine, then Madam Bandit’s approach with “Lie to Me” will feel very familiar. Tuning to a less-is-more mindset, they both relish feel above anything else using their music as a playground. Madam Bandit shows off her prowess as a sensual songwriter here, letting us into her world of dreams where flights of fancy are expected and encouraged.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
