Baltimore-based rapper, maderanged, takes a page from Kendrick Lamar’s classic m.A.A.d city with the single “boogeyman” off his own upcoming EP, Bleak. With drums leading the charge of the song after an extended instrumental opening, there’s a palpable electricity that flows through the bedrock of the song.
Once maderanged gets started, it seems like his flow never truly stops as he highlights some vocal quirks like quick falsetto notes and grunts among a complicated rhyme scheme that is infinitely captivating. It’s a Avant Garde kind of rap that takes more pride in off-kilter rhythmic structures focusing more on multiple rhymes in a single line while staying true to the underlying thematic content of running a victory lap.
This is one of those songs that doesn’t have a true verse-chorus structure neither. Each stanza or section feels distinct in feel as maderanged keeps his nose to the grindstone of his lyrical flow. If it’s an indication of what’s to come on his upcoming EP, it shows off an elaborate vision of spitfire rhymes and rhythms that stand out from the more generic pop attempts at hip hop. This will be an album with something to say.
“The song really came together by itself,” says maderanged. “The recording session, and really the whole week, was originally scheduled for a song that was supposed to be on my upcoming EP. When we played this back at the end of the week though, I just knew we had to drop it as a precursor to the EP and what it would sound like.”

His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
