Mark Erelli Treasures Every Second in New Music Video for “You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This”
Folk rock singer-songwriter Mark Erelli has captivated listeners throughout his career, both as a partner and producer on award-winning projects and in his personal work. On September 29th, he released the music video for “You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This,” directed by Tom Krueger. Co-written with his “musical big sister,” Grammy award-winner Lori McKenna, the track serves as the lead single for his upcoming album, Lay Your Darkness Down.
The video is a sentimental compilation of past memories and present scenes from a profoundly joyful daily life – with his beloved wife, children, and dog against the beautiful rural landscape he calls home. Throughout, Erelli combats the hard truths about life with a sense of childlike wonder and gratitude.
The creative choices made for the music video — including the blurred edges of many scenes — hint at the life-altering inspiration behind “You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This” and the new LP. Amid 2020’s global hardships, Erelli was diagnosed with the degenerative eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). What followed was an in-depth exploration of his role as husband, father, and artist in the face of adversity, and the search for creative agency when your worldview literally changes.
A persevering spirit in the face of adversity, Erelli began creating from an at-home studio for the first time since 2014. Lay Your Darkness Down is Erelli’s story of resilience and the indomitable creative spirit.
“Sharing my diagnosis is my way of laying down my own darkness,” shares Erelli. “By making my private struggles public, maybe it helps others to see that we all have a choice. We can be overwhelmed by the shadows, or use them to show where the light is coming from. As for me, no matter what happens, I’ll forever be looking for the light.”
