New York City-based electro pop musician, Rachel Bochner, is ready to blow off some steam (and some serious money) with her latest single “last paycheck.”
There’s a bubbliness to this song that is reminiscent of big pop acts like Lorde and Taylor Swift. The verses revel in a smooth, ethereal flow while the choruses fizz over like champagne flutes. Youthful carelessness seeps from every note, as Bochner sings, “I packed my best new clothes and my beat-up shoes / We got our last paychecks and stupid things to do / Like matching tattoos.”
As the chorus bursts forward with the line, “I wanna act rich,” it feels clear that despite having left her job for undisclosed reasons, Bochner has luxurious dreams. There’s a catharsis that comes with spending money frivolously that can make you feel larger than life, and this song is a great representation of how that feels – the moment before reality has a chance to set in. Now is not the time to mind the consequences, however, but rather to indulge in defiant celebration of detaching from toxic environments.
Bochner describes the new track as, “An anthem for the broke 20 somethings who wish they could quit their jobs & blow their cash on whatever they feel like. Pulling from influences such as Fletcher, Upsahl, and Reputation-era Taylor Swift, ‘last paycheck’ is the type of song that you’ll want to blast in the over-capacity Uber from the pregame to the bar.”
